Magellan, setting a new stylish ocean course
No compromises, maximum performance, style and luxury combined with high-tech components: the new boat-building kid on the block Magellan Marine AG (www.magellan-marine.com) has set the bar high for itself in terms of its chosen philosophy.
Founded by Peter Mintel in spring 2009, the company is headquartered in Liechtenstein but it will do its actual building in Italy, a nation that Mintel feels is at the very cutting-edge of the industry.
The first model from the new company is the Magellan Space, an 18-metre limited edition motoryacht which will be built for just 33 lucky owners worldwide. Mintel himself created the concept but entrusted the naval design to Andrew Lea, and the interior and interior styling to Maximilian Kolb. Aluminium was chosen as the construction material for the hull as it’s been widely proven in both the aeronautical and automotive industries as offering maximum stability, high corrosion and rust resistance in addition to being very, very light. It’s already been used with success by international navies, police forces and in salvage and rescue vessels as well as by shipping companies the world over. On top of all of this, aluminium has a very low specific weight of just one third of that of steel. Neither does it require moulds to be made as fibreglass would and it is easy to make modifications as work progresses. It doesn’t have any problems with osmosis, is completely recyclable and is a major factor in keeping resale values high on the pre-owned market. One of the many peculiarities of the Magellan Space is its Axe Bow Concept which lends it a sense of dynamism and makes for much more space below decks. The roomy owner’s stateroom is amidships, by the way. It also has what Mintel refers to as a Panorama Roof, an innovative double glass sliding roof with integrated solar panels the energy from which is stored in lithium ion batteries. The saloon beneath the roof is so flooded with light that it actually feels like it is open-topped.
The Magellan Space gets its power from twin Volvo Penta IPS 1200s which give it a top speed of 35 knots. It can also take aboard up to 2,800 litres of diesel. Alternatively, owners can choose to install a triple engine set-up. The advantage of the Volvo Penta IPS 1200s is that they cut CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by 30% whilst offering a 20% higher top speed. Perceived noise levels are down 50% too and there is also a saving of between 20% and 30% on weight and installation times.
The Magellan Space comes with a price tag of 1.68 million euro, before extras, such as the generator, bow thrusters, air-conditioning, watermaker and Transformer hydraulic custom platform.
