Liberi Tutti: sailing towards stronger mental health
Sailing not just as a sport but as a framework for life is the concept that underpins Liberi Tutti, an initiative launched by the Viareggio Local Health Authority’s Adult Mental Health Unit which treats mental illness sufferers at Versilia Hospital.
The theory is that navigation actually helps these individuals regain their social skills and relate better to other people. Sharing a boat and a common gaol also mean that certain rules have to be followed. The project involves weekly boat trips, training, boating holidays and regattas. The activities will go on all year round, starting from August 31st next, with participants sailing the seas around Versilia in summer and the waters of Lake Massaciuccoli in winter.
Sailing is uniquely suitable to the Liberi Tutti project. Firstly, boats are a residential environment: they’re a sort of home, a shell that contains, a space that needs care and love, a place of protection and attachment, and also a way of striking up a deep relationship with the sea. Having to look after a boat actually forges a bond between the crew members. It also gives them a strong feeling of belonging that transcends their differences and fosters a desire to contribute as much as possible to the shared activity.
The project is being promoted by Professor Mario di Fiorino, Director of the Adult Mental Health Operational Unit at Versilia Hospital, and Raffaella Agrippa, the local coordinator of the structure. The Circolo Velico di Marina di Pietrasanta sailing club has also provided invaluable support by making the necessary boats available for the scheme.
Participants will be accompanied by voluntary skippers, nurses and doctors from the Area Mental Health Service.
