Hermitage Bay Antigua: the sound of silence
If your ears prick up at the mention of dancing ’til dawn and jet ski racing, and non-stop activities and entertainment are your idea of the perfect holiday, then Hermitage Bay won’t be for you.
This sublime corner of heaven on earth is made up of 25 cottage suites and lies in one of the wildest and most beautiful stretches of the east coast of the island of Antigua. This, of course, makes it the idea haven in which to simply chill out, recharge the batteries and get back in touch with nature. But all that relaxation and tranquillity doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. Quite the opposite, in fact. The bay overlooked by the resort is perfect for kayaking, wind surfing and snorkelling. Motor sports, however, are frowned upon as they would shatter the heavenly peace. In general guests must be over the age of 12 for the same reason. However, between the 1st of July and August 31st, over-8s are admitted.
Cuisine is another high point at Hermitage Bay too, thanks to the talents of Dezi Banhan, the award-winning chef whose offerings are a magnificently successful fusion of the local and avant-garde. The resorts 25 cottages are divided into three categories. The 17 Hillside Cottage Suites guarantee absolute privacy. Each has its own plunge pool with stunning views (below, right) as well as a sun deck complete with lounge area and shower. The five Beachfront Cottage Suites are located actually on the beach, while the three Beach Cottage Suites are slightly further back but still enjoy direct access. All three suite types have wonderful dark wood floors (below, left) and gorgeous bath tubs overlooking the sea. Naturally, the prices match the quality of the location. Accommodation and service start from 1,700 US dollars per night per suite.
